Despite extreme conditions, hardship and deprivation, his initiative, perseverance and stamina prevailed and the Steger International Polar Expedition was successful in reaching the North Pole, unassisted by outside help. He is a tourist outfitter and breeder of Eskimo sled dogs, and one of a new generation of Northerners who is helping to promote the Arctic.
