Six-time Canadian amateur super heavyweight boxing champion, former world junior champion, holder of gold medals from the 1986 Commonwealth Games and the 1987 North American Championships among many others, he was determined to win an Olympic gold medal at Seoul. In the final fight of the Olympics he proved his overwhelming superiority over the best amateur boxers in his weight class in the world and won Canada's first Olympic Gold Medal in boxing since 1932.
