A champion of human rights, this former puisne judge of the supreme Court of British Columbia is probably best remembered for his role as the leader of a one-man Royal Commission, the MacKenzie Valley Pipeline Inquiry, the results of which produced a landmark decision with respect to environmental issues and to Native claims in Canada. He continues to impart his legal knowledge as a university lecturer and remains a powerful advocate of Canadian unity and equality.
