A pioneer in cancer research, he has made outstanding contributions to medical science both through his own research and through his administrative accomplishments and the impact he has had on his students and colleagues during his long and distinguished career. Of major importance is his discovery of Vinblastine, a compound which has proved to be effective in the treatment of several forms of cancer and is in daily use in hospitals around the world.
