As Head of General Surgery at Toronto General Hospital and Chair of Surgery at the University of Toronto, he fostered excellence and established one of Canada's premier multi-organ transplant centres. He also created the University of Toronto's Surgical-Scientist Program, an internationally emulated training model designed to combine clinical and research training at the highest level. He is widely respected for his leadership in national and international surgical and scientific organizations and past Presidency of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
