Called the father of evidence-based medicine, he developed a methodology for clinical trials that has been widely accepted as the norm for evaluating new treatment options. The founding Chair of McMaster University's clinical epidemiology department, the first of its kind in North America, he also pioneered teaching programs in this field and initiated internationally renowned research and training programs. His expertise was recognized by Oxford University, where he was invited to become the first Director of the Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine. In addition, he was one of the principal researchers in the groundbreaking work that linked aspirin to the prevention of stroke.
