From his base at the University of Toronto, he has gained international recognition for his discoveries in the field of immunology, particularly for his work on the mechanisms which regulate the immune response. Equally well- known as an authority on and promoter of contemporary Canadian Indian art, he has, through extensive loans of his important collection, made Canadians more aware of this aspect of their heritage.
