Born in Toronto, he joined the Bank of Montreal in 1931. After many promotions in the Bank he eventually became its President and Chief Executive Officer in 1959, and subsequently Chairman of the Board. In 1969 he inaugurated the Bank of Montreal Youth Project, which integrates disadvantaged youth into the main stream of society by training them as employees of the Bank; its success has inspired the founding of a similar organization involving thirteen companies.
