Born in Oshawa, Ontario, he joined the Royal Bank of Canada in 1936 and had risen to be Chairman and Chief Executive Officer by 1977. As a result of his efforts the Royal Bank Award is given annually for major contributions by Canadians in many fields. Though retired in Montreal, he continues to devote time and effort to many voluntary enterprises.
