She emerged from a seven-year retirement from sport pistol shooting in 1982 with the goal of making the Olympic team. Not only did this Ottawa resident succeed in making the team, she became the first woman in the world to win an Olympic gold medal in pistol shooting, the first Canadian woman to win a gold medal in a summer Olympics since 1928 and the first Canadian to win a gold medal in a summer Olympics since 1968.
