Michael James is a trailblazer in protein crystallography. A distinguished university professor emeritus at the University of Alberta, he established the country’s first protein crystallography laboratory, which served as a training ground for generations of scientists and contributed to advancing the field. His earliest work uncovering some of the first detailed structural views of proteins continues to influence new developments, including medical treatments for bacterial infections, HIV and genetic diseases.
