Captain Newton was the base commander for Canadian Forces Base Halifax from July 2008 to July 2010. During his tenure, he displayed exceptional leadership in guiding the planning and execution of two extremely high-profile ceremonial events: the consecration and presentation of a new Queen’s Colour to Maritime Command in 2009, and the international fleet review by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in 2010. Through his success, Canadians were inspired anew by their navy as a treasured national institution, and sailors were filled with pride in their naval service to Canada.
