From July 1995 to January 1996, Master Warrant Officer Santerre was assigned to the 95th Multidisciplinary Support Group of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Rwanda. Master Warrant Officer Santerre displayed a high degree of professionalism in discharging his duties as the unit maintenance officer, among other things, by helping to clean up the site of a disastrous accident between a tanker and a mini-van in which 24 people were killed. In addition to serving as co-chair of the unit's orphanage committee, he worked tirelessly to coordinate the assistance provided to some 20 orphanages throughout Rwanda. His compassion and courage earned him deep respect, as an individual and as a member of the Canadian Forces.
