From December 1992 to March 1993, Lieutenant MacKinnon operated a medical clinic, worked in hospitals and orphanages and provided humanitarian assistance to the victims of war and famine in the city of Mogadishu, Somalia, during emergency UN operations there. Her unselfish and dedicated work, at a time when coalition forces were under continuous risk of attack from warring Somali clans, eased the plight of many victims and laid the groundwork for continued contributions from other relief agencies.
