Medal of Bravery
On August 15, 2009, Sergeant Matt Myers, Constable Brian Carmichael and firefighters John Lamkey and Troy Wilcox attempted to rescue three young men from a vehicle submerged in the St. John River, in Fredericton, New Brunswick. A female passenger had managed to escape through an opening in the roof, but three men remained trapped inside. Tethered by ropes, the rescuers plunged into the murky water to locate the vehicle. After numerous dives, they succeeded, and treaded water above the car while firefighter Wilcox dove down to hook a tow line to the bumper. The car was then pulled out. Sadly, the victims did not survive.
