On October 6, 1984, Leslie Scanlan did not hesitate to enter a burning house when he learned that an elderly man was still sleeping upstairs. Despite the heat and the choking smoke, he found the bedroom, forced open the door and found the man in his bed. He tried in vain to wake him, then grabbed him an dragged him to the door. With the fire spreading rapidly, and windows exploring from the heat, he was forced to stop to free the man's foot which had become caught. He succeeded in dragging the victim out seconds before the house was completely engulfed.
