Late on the evening of 2 November 1981, William Estabrooks was motoring on the highway when he witnessed a car swerve, enter a ditch and burst into flames. At the scene of the accident, Mr. Estabrooks saw through the smoke the semi-conscious driver pinned to his seat. Though the heat was intense, he broke the window with his foot and opened the door. Extending his head and shoulders into the vehicle, he strained to dislodge the victim's foot from underneath the debris and carried him to safety. Seconds later the car exploded.
