James L. Crane, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
On October 28, 1970, James Crane of Halifax, Nova Scotia, swam to the rescue of a driver whose car had plunged over the bank into the St. John River, New Brunswick. The car, which somehow went out of control, carried the driver out into the current. The car floated about 150 feet down stream and sank 50 feet from shore. As the car settled on the bottom of the river, the driver managed to extricate himself, but he had not the strength to reach shore. Responding to shouts for help, James Crane ran to the river's edge and swam out to the victim who by that time had disappeared below the surface. When Mr. Crane reached him he was in a semi-conscious state. Mr. Crane towed him to shore where others helped carry him to safety.
