Medal of Bravery
On January 18, 1986, Michèle Chappaz, Frank Christman, Lindsay Young, and Lorna Young, in a concerted effort, saved the life of a 74-year-old man who had fallen through the ice on Lake Massawippi near North Hatley, Quebec. Mr. Christman spotted two dogs and a low, dark form far out on the ice. He rang for assistance and Lorna Young, Lindsay Young and Michèle Chappaz came running with an extension ladder and blankets. Lindsay Young and Michèle Chappaz started across the ice with the extension ladder but both Mr. Young and the ladder fell through. Unharmed, he returned to shore. Lorna Young, Michèle Chappaz and Frank Christman crept on towards the floundering man, unwinding an extension cord as a safety line as they went. On reaching the victim, Michèle Chappaz anchored the line while Lorna Young and Frank Christman, lying on the ice, attempted to pull the weakening man from the water. Unable to accomplish this, they stayed out on the ice, holding him above the water until members of the North Hatley Fire Department arrived and were able to effect a rescue.
