Medal of Bravery
On April 17, 1994, Mr. Abray and Mr. Schofield saved a man and his two children whose boat had capsized in the icy waters of Coal Lake, southeast of Leduc, Alberta. Seeing the boat tip over, trapping one of the children underneath, the two rescuers swam to their aid. While Mr. Schofield lifted one end of the overturned craft, Mr. Abray freed the child, who was entangled in a fishing net, and swam back to shore with the boy in tow. Despite submerging a number of times in the effort, Mr. Schofield managed to push and pull the other boy and his father through the frigid waters to the safety of the shore.
