On May 29, 1990, Mr. Young pulled a woman from a flaming car following a road accident near Edson, Alberta. One of the first to arrive on the scene of the accident, he raced to the car which had evidently been rear-ended by a truck. He peered into the smoke-filled vehicle and was able to distinguish a woman trapped inside. While others battled the flames with fire extinguishers, he took a piece of wood from the nearby truck to smash the passenger window. Unable to extricate the victim from that side, he ran around and smashed the window on the driver's side. Mr. Young then pulled the victim from the flaming vehicle which, within seconds, was completely engulfed.
