Medal of Bravery
Early on the afternoon of 8 June 1984, Sidney Snarr and William Yonev joined forces to save a man from a fiery death on a highway near North Bay. After the man had lost control of his pickup truck, it bounced off a rock then rolled on its side and burst into flames. On arrival at the scene of the accident, Messrs. Snarr and Yonev saw the driver slumped in the front seat, unable to save himself. In spite of the blistering heat, Mr. Yonev grabbed hold of the man and eased him through the broken windshield. Meanwhile, Mr. Snarr reached into the searing flames to untangle the victim's leg, caught between the seat and the dashboard. With considerable difficulty they succeeded in pulling him out, then carried him a safe distance away and extinguished the fire on his clothing. Seconds later the truck exploded. Mr. Snarr suffered second and third degree burns to his arms.
