On 8 January 1978, Paul Worsfold, then aged thirteen, saved a seven-year-old boy from drowning in a pond on the Burnaby golf course. The boy had broken through thin ice and his splashing was heard by Paul who was in the vicinity. After Paul had looked in vain for a pole, he inched his way over the thicker part of the ice to within reach of the boy and pulled him out of the water. With the ice cracking under their weight they managed to crawl back to shore.
