Shortly after midnight on 3 February 1985, security guard John Woodhouse rescued the passenger of a burning wreck following a traffic accident. John Woodhouse had just completed a building check when he noticed flames on the roadway. He immediately drove to the scene, grabbed his fire extinguisher and rushed to assist. Through thick smoke, he saw a man desperately trying to free himself from one of the two vehicles. Unable to pen the doors, Mr. Woodhouse smashed a window and drained his fire extinguisher onto the blaze. He then reached inside and attempted to drag the victim out but he was driven back by a sudden flare-up. Undeterred, Mr. Woodhouse returned to the inferno, pulled the semi-conscious man through the window and carried him a safe distance away. By then, the vehicle was fully ablaze and the driver could not be saved.
