On the evening of 8 August 1980 David Wood, with exemplary courage disarmed an extremely dangerous man in a crowded bar-restaurant. The man, angered at being ejected from the premises, returned with a 12-gauge shotgun and began firing. His first shot wounded a patron and killed a waitress; his second injured no one, but before he could fire a third, Mr. Wood tackled him and wrestled him to the floor. After a violent struggle Mr. Wood managed to disarm the gunman and pin him. Had he not acted quickly, with complete disregard for his safety, it is almost certain that others would have been injured or killed.
