Siegfried Wolf, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
Siegfried Wolf of Illingen, Germany, sustained painful injuries in an attempt to rescue the pilot of a Canadian Armed Forces aircraft which crashed on July 25, 1969. Mr. Wolf was driving along a road in the vicinity of the accident and witnessed the aircraft disintegrate and fall to the ground. Accompanied by his brother, he drove to the crash site. They saw that the pilot was trapped in the wreckage and that there was a small blaze close to the cockpit. Obtaining a fire extinguisher from a motorist who had arrived on the scene, Mr. Wolf attempted to put out the fire. While he was thus engaged, the charge connected to the ejection seat exploded, hurling fragments of metal in all directions. Siegfried Wolf, standing so near, suffered severe fractures and burns as a result of which he was hospitalized and incapacitated for some months. The rescue effort was in vain as the pilot had succumbed to his injuries in the crash. For his courageous action, Mr. Wolf deserves high praise.
