At approximately 7:00 a.m. on March 12, 1985, Cst. Michel Prud'homme of the Ottawa Police Department received a call to proceed to the Turkish Embassy in regard to a possible bombing incident. Arriving within a minute, and seeing the front door shattered, he ran to the back of the property where residents of an adjoining apartment building advised him that a person was lying on the concrete patio at the rear of the embassy. Seeing no activity at the back of the building, he quickly climbed over the fence and was able to approach the person without incident. The injured man was the Turkish Ambassador, who had jumped from a second-floor window to escape the terrorists inside. At that location both he and Cst. Prud'homme were in full view from any of the windows or doors at the back of the embassy, so the police officer dragged the Ambassador to relative safety at the corner of the building. A cold and heavy rain was falling, so Cst. Prud'homme removed his jacket to cover the Ambassador and remained with him, gun drawn, until approximately 11:20 a.m., when the three terrorists, holding eleven people hostage inside, surrendered.
