John Wayne Weiler, M.B.
Medal of Bravery
Nineteen-year-old John Wayne Weiler rescued a multiple sclerosis victim when his house in Austin, Manitoba was destroyed by fire on March 8, 1972. The young man, a tenant in the house, was in the basement bedroom when a propane heater exploded. In order to reach the outside, he was obliged to dash through the flames in the stairway. Emerging with his clothing on fire, Mr. Weiler rolled in the snow and when the flames were extinguished, he returned at once to help the older man. Carrying the disabled man on his back, Mr. Weiler made his way through the house to the front entrance and both escaped. The rescuer was confined for some time in hospital recovering from the burns he sustained in the course of his courageous action.
