On 1 May 1984, in Surrey, British Columbia, a woman's car was struck by a truck, demolishing the rear-end and rupturing the gas tank. Mr. Weber watched as the car, already on fire, shot over the ditch and crashed in a field. In the few moments he took to reach the wreck, it had filled with smoke, with the rear burning fiercely. The driver was dazed and unable to help herself. Mr. Weber was initially unable to force the door open but, spurred by the threat of explosion and the rapidly increasing heat, he managed to rip it open. Leaning inside, close to the flames, he undid the seat-belt and lifted the woman out.
