James Walsh (now a private stationed at Baden-Soellingen, Germany) saved a four-year-old boy and his younger brother from a fire at their home on 20 July 1978. Mr. Walsh, a friend of the boys` family, was passing the house when he saw flames leaping from the windows. Entering the building, he found the four-year-old and took him to safety. He then went in again and, following the cries of the second child, found him and took him out. Aware of a third child, he went in once more. Encountering the children's father, he helped him to safety; but because of the intense heat and smoke, efforts failed to find the remaining child.
