On December 22, 1986, Benjamin Lyall Warren was one of a crew of five fishing for lobster off Brier Island in the Bay of Fundy. Suddenly, another crew member was hurled overboard when a grapnel caught his oilskin pants. Mr. Warren, knowing that the victim was a non-swimmer, immediately stripped off his "gear" and jumped into the water. He pulled the man out from under the boat, which the wind was blowing back over them, and kept him afloat until he could tie a rope, thrown by the crew, around him. Mr. Warren waited in the chilly water until the victim was hauled on to the deck, and then he, too, was hoisted aboard. Although almost unconscious from his near- drowning, the man soon recovered from his ordeal.
