Joseph Waldner rescued a man from a fire in the latter's car after an accident at Portage la Prairie on 12 November 1979. The man had lost control while driving over a patch of icy road and had crashed into a railing. Fire had broken out and the semi-conscious driver was trapped inside. Mr. Waldner arrived momentarily and broke a rear window through which he crawled and vainly tried to open the car door. He then pulled the victim into the rear seat and with help from another man removed him through the broken window, just as smoke was filling the car. Finally he took the man to the hospital for treatment of his burns.
