On December 1, 1984, eleven-year-old Lisa Volk saved the life of a three-year-old boy when a sleeping bag caught fire from a candle used to light the houseboat in which she was babysitting. Unable to extinguish the fire with a blanket, Lisa reached for the fire extinguisher and managed to suppress the flames on the sleeping bag but, by that time, the blaze had spread the couch. Thinking quickly, she climbed the ladder to the loft, woke the young child and, in total darkness, carried him out of the houseboat and across the logs to safety.
