Without the slightest concern for his life, George Richard Tucker, attempted to save a man from drowning at Sandy Cove, Newfoundland, on 22 May 1980. The man, age 67, lost control of his car which rolled off the end of a pier and plunged into 10 metres of water. Mr. Tucker witnessed the accident, rushed to the end of the pier and unhesitatingly jumped in the water. Meanwhile, the victim had been straining to open or break the car windows but the vehicle rapidly sank to the bottom. Mr. Tucker attempted to reach the driver but, sadly, his efforts were in vain. It was with great difficulty that he, himself, was able to return to the pier.
