Medal of Brvery
In the early hours of 23 November 1980, Jacques Fortin and Csts. Daniel Laganière and Yves Trudel, of the Quebec Provincial Police, saved a man from a determined suicide attempt in Lac aux Brochets. The two policemen had come to investigate the erratic behaviour of an area resident who was threatening to kill himself while walking on the ice of the partly-frozen lake. At the same time Mr. Fortin arrived on the scene, recognized the man fast approaching the open water and in spite of obvious danger, yet resolute to avert a tragedy, proceeded on the treacherous surface. As he urged the unfortunate man to return to shore the ice suddenly collapsed and both fell through. Mr. Fortin then kept the man afloat until the patrolmen arrived. Inching his way over the thin ice, Cst. Trudel extended a branch to Mr. Fortin to drag him out of the water. Meanwhile, Cst. Laganière had reached the drowning man and, stretched over the ice, held him by the arm until the other officer came. They united efforts to pull him to safety.
