Medal of Bravery
Csts. Allen Hopper and Eric Thorne saved three workers rendered unconscious by carbon monoxide gases in the underground chamber of a sewer lift station at Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan on 15 July 1979. One of the three victims had collapsed while attempting to assist his two colleagues. Csts. Hopper and Thorne were called to the rescue and told that if not removed quickly, the three men would die. Fully cognizant of the hazards involved and at great risk to their lives, they entered the underground gas filled compartment. In spite of their efforts being impeded by the exiguity of the chamber, the weight of the victims and the breathing of gaseous fumes, they succeeded in hoisting the men to safety.
