On August 8, 1985, John Boyarski confronted a man, armed with a semi-automatic pistol, who was attacking a young girl on a Vancouver street. The man was attempting to drag the girl to his car when Mr. Boyarski, the driver of a bus, arrived on the scene. Unaware at first that the man was armed, he left the bus and approached the attacker, but not before she had suffered two gunshot wounds in the arm. The girl escaped onto the bus while Mr. Boyarski faced the assailant who fired three shots in his direction. The aggressor then fled in his car but was soon apprehended by the police.
