On November 29, 1987, a man was trapped in his burning basement in St-Raymond, Portneuf County, Quebec, following an explosion in his air-tight stove. As soon as he was informed of the situation Mr. Doris Noreau, along with three other men, rushed to the scene. He entered the home but the smoke soon forced him to retreat. It was suggested that he use a door located at the back of the house leading to the basement. The outside door was smashed in and the inner door at the bottom of the stairs was ajar. The smoke in the basement was so dense that someone went to get wet towels. Standing in the doorway Mr. Noreau called to the victim, who answered before losing consciousness. Armed with a flashlight he felt his way into the basement in the direction from which the voice seemed to have come, but was driven back by the thick smoke. As soon as someone handed him a wet towel he made another attempt. He searched the basement until he found the man lying immobile on the floor. He grasped the victim's arm and dragged him with great difficulty to the doorway where further help was waiting.
