On October 27, 1986, in Sarnia, Ontario, Mr. Schultz, an inspector for a pipeline company, was instrumental in evacuating the site when a pipeline was ruptured allowing liquid butane to escape and a vapor cloud to form. During the process of excavating the pipeline, a welded steel fitting was struck and broken off by a backhoe, releasing the butane. Mr. Schultz immediately yelled to the construction workers to get away from the dangerous cloud that was forming, then ran to two adjacent houses to alert the occupants. While he was standing in front of the second house, the vapor cloud exploded, igniting Mr. Schultz's clothing. He rolled on the grass to extinguish the flames, then returned to assist the elderly couple from the house before being taken to hospital where he remained for one month.
