On February 22, 1996, Patrick Émond, age 24, saved a woman from a fire that destroyed an inn located in Ste. Pétronille on Île d'Orléans in Quebec. Despite the raging flames and thick smoke which filled the building, night watchman Patrick Émond ran up to the third floor to warn the establishment's only guest, yelling and banging on her door to awaken her. He urged the woman to follow him, but she was driven back to her room by the thick smoke. Although the woman was able to escape by breaking a window, her rescuer unfortunately perished in the blaze.
