North of Drumheller, Alberta, Derrick Wilson pulled his uncle from the wreckage of a burning plane on June 19, 1989. Derrick Wilson and his father were marking their field for crop spraying when Derrick's uncle, who was spraying the herbicide from his plane above, inadvertently flew into some overhead wires and crashed. Derrick Wilson, who was closest to the accident site, ran to the flaming wreck to find his semi-conscious uncle suspended in the cockpit, clothing afire. He reached into the cockpit and extinguished the flames on the coveralls with his bare hands. Derrick Wilson then pulled off his uncle's seat belt and eased him from the wreckage, dragging him a safe distance away to wait for help to arrive.
