On September 26, 1986, Marvin Adam performed the daring rescue of two children from a burning house on the Fond du Lac Indian Reserve in Saskatchewan. Mr. Adam was helping to build a new house when at around 9 a.m., one of his co-workers noticed smoke coming from the residence next door. The men rushed over to investigate. After breaking in the rear door, Mr. Adam went inside to see if there were any occupants. He found a small boy, badly burned, near the front door and carried him outside to his waiting colleagues. He re-entered, locating a little girl and her mother unconscious in a back bedroom; he picked the girl up and carried her outside, then entered the house a third time, this time to rescue the mother. However, he was overcome by the thick, black smoke and forced back outside. He was able to give instructions to two other men, who managed to carry on his work and rescue the mother. Unfortunately, the little boy succumbed to his injuries, but the girl recovered after receiving extensive treatment.
