On January 4, 1985, Mr. Samuel Adair was visiting relatives in Sudbury when he spotted what appeared to be flames coming from a house across the street. Mr. Adair knew the house to be occupied by an elderly widower living alone and he rushed over to investigate. As he forced open the front door, a wall of smoke pushed him back. After inhaling fresh air, he entered the house and proceeded in total darkness, to look for the occupant. He heard someone coughing and felt his way towards the sound, reaching the victim, who was slowly crawling in the direction of the front door, and assisting him outside where the elderly gentleman collapsed, overcome by smoke. With the help of his wife, Mr. Adair dragged the victim to a neighbour's house where he received first aid until the ambulance arrived.
