On August 3, 1986, then MCpl. Wilson rescued three members of a family from drowning at a public beach in Ipperwash Provincial Park near London, Ontario. Spotting a woman and a young girl caught in the strong undercurrent and heavy surf, MCpl. Wilson armed himself with a life jacket and swam out to the victims. After reaching them, he used the life jacket to pull them to safety. When the agitated woman said that her husband was still in the water, he swam farther out and was able to grab the man. Weakening and unable to make any headway, MCpl. Wilson was aided by a young woman and a soldier. All four reached the shore safely.
