On June 2, 1992, in the village of Maccan, Nova Scotia, Mr. Voss averted the possible explosion of an overturned gasoline tanker. He saw the tanker roll over, hit a hydro pole and come to rest a few feet away in a widening pool of gasoline. The hydro wires were dangling and sparking; the pole and the grass around it were on fire. Aware of how dangerous the fire would be if it reached the gasoline, Mr. Voss grabbed an extinguisher and, after going around the tanker and underneath the wires, put out most of the flames. After the extinguisher was empty, he stamped out the rest of the flames with his boots, making sure that the fire did not ignite the gasoline.
