Blazon

Sable two pairs of strands of Celtic knotwork in saltire Argent;

Symbolism

lack and white are the colours often used by Irish bearers of the surname Connolly. To Mr. Connolly, they also symbolize the robes of a Knight of Malta, reflecting his position in the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John of Jerusalem of Rhodes and of Malta. The X-shape alludes to the saltire on the traditional Connolly arms and on those of Nova Scotia, his home province, as well as on the emblem of the United States Marine Corps regiment in which Mr. Connolly served, the Fifth Marines. The intertwined strands represent strength and the importance of mutual aid.

The sea lion is featured on several heraldic emblems of public institutions in the Philippines, reflecting the heritage of Mr. Connolly’s wife. It also alludes to the Marine Corps, whose officers wear a Mameluke sword.

This Latin phrase, meaning “His faithfulness is a shield and buckler,” is taken from Psalm 91. It expresses Mr. Connolly’s feeling that the hand of God has protected him throughout many difficult situations, especially the three times he saw combat.
