They also allude to his British and American ancestry. The rose indicates his ancestry in Yorkshire, England, and the way it shelters rosebuds is an allusion to his career in children’s services. The three pheons are taken from arms previously borne by other Hildreths, the old Massachusetts family from which Mr. Hildreth comes. |
