Blazon

Azure on a pile reversed throughout between two spirals Argent, a Latin cross Azure set on a poppy issuant from the base proper;

Symbolism

Blue and white, the colours of the Quebec flag, represent Mr. Lapointe’s Francophone identity. The triangular form (the French heraldic term for which is pointe) is a pun on Mr. Lapointe’s name. The cross represents his Christian faith, and alludes to the cross erected by Jacques Cartier on the summit of Mount Royal. The poppy honours Mr. Lapointe’s soldier ancestors who dedicated themselves to the defence of liberty. The white spirals represent galaxies, and relate Mr. Lapointe’s wonderment at the immensity of the Universe and his reflections on our place within it.

Crest

Blazon

A beaver sejant erect holding in its dexter paw a torch enflamed and resting its sinister paw on a sword point downward, upon a grassy mount proper issuant from a coronet of points and anchors Or, its rim set with a jewel Purpure;

Symbolism

The beaver is a symbol of hard work and industriousness. It also recalls the arms of Matane, a town to which Mr. Lapointe is particularly attached. The torch signifies the guiding light of knowledge. The sword is a reminder that one must be ready to defend one’s nation and one’s values. The coronet is a symbol of royalty, and alludes to his mother’s surname (Sirois or sire roi in French, meaning “sire king”). The coronet’s points once again recall Mr. Lapointe’s name, and the anchors represent the need to remain “anchored” to what is important in life, and not to stray. The single purple jewel represents his daughter.

Motto

Blazon

ENTRE FLEUVE ET FORÊT;

Symbolism

This French phrase, meaning “Between river and forest,” refers to Mr. Lapointe’s love of the St. Lawrence River and nature, while alluding to the landscape surrounding the cities of Montréal and Matane.
