The upper portion of the sea-horse is representative of Mr. Hyde’s membership in the Honourable Society of the Inner Temple (an association of barristers in the United Kingdom) of which the Pegasus is the emblem; the lower half is both a reference to his passion for sea-going pursuits and to his mother’s maiden name of Fisher. |

The Roman fasces allude to Mr. Hyde’s training as a lawyer. They were also a symbol of civil authority in ancient Rome, and thus symbolizes Mr. Hyde’s work in municipal government. |
