The mandrake, a plant used in the Middle Ages for its anesthetic properties, pays homage to Mr. Lanoway’s work as a paramedic. The forked root vegetable resembling a human figure was believed to have magical properties and to emit a piercing scream when anyone tried to pull it from the ground.
